I punctured my heart.
How could I?
How could I?
How could I do such a thing?
I should have let
sleeping dogs lie;
but was it wrong
to be optimistic
and coated in confidence,
ignoring a second thought
of ‘what if’?
Here it bleeds fire
that burns a cavity in my soul
throwing my mind in disarray.
and my body
in an uneasy state.
But my brain comes to work
with a certain thought
about the phoenix;
reminding me of how
it must burn to be re-born.
With that as the last piece
to the puzzle,
I emerged from the ashes
of my failed past
knowing I leave nothing behind
as I take the next exit
to a new life.

Wonderful poem 🙂
Nicely written, expressed beautifully.
I think it’s pretty cool that we get to have as many “do-overs” as we need. Love this!
Remarkable! burn to be reborn, next exit to a new life — ironies of life can really be good 🙂
What an excellent title for such a wonderful poem. I like how you dust off and start your new life at the next exit so well done
hopeful, keep dreaming.

Very well said! Great poem that speaks great truth. We must leave the past and move forward; always!
I love the last line “as I take the next exit to a new life”. That leaves such promise. So nice!
